In the United States, EchoStar has deployed over 20 million set top boxes to over 12 million subscribers of the Dish Network. Along the way, we’ve learned a lot about building receivers that minimise the overall cost to our operator business. We understand that a service operator is concerned about many aspects of a customer set top box:

• ease of installation means that the installer can activate more units per day
• reliable boxes with long lives save money spent on the returns process
• ease of use for the customer results in a better user experience and fewer calls to the call centre
• flexible designs allow the operator to easily update the software to add new features and new pay services resulting in greater revenue

EchoStar has always believed strongly in providing the latest technologies using stable designs. Today we have integrated a wide range of new technologies like MPEG4, Digital Video Recording and High Definition to our receivers. These technologies can be adapted to all types of services: satellite, digital terrestrial, cable, IPTV and mobile TV.

Also, two or more of these service front ends can be combined in a single unit to benefit from the inherent advantages of each type of service. For instance, a combination satellite and IPTV box can receive large amounts of the most popular video over satellite, while using IPTV to pull in niche content that would otherwise not be available to an end user.
